NBA Athletes v. Fox News Reporter (2018)

NBA ATHLETES V. FOX NEWS REPORTER (2018)

Controversy

Laura Ingraham degrading NBA athletes with harsh statements
Fox News reporter, Laura Ingraham, told National Basketball Association (NBA) athletes LeBron James and Kevin Durant to “shut up and dribble” after speaking up about political issues and problems they have with the current president of the United States. The talk between Durant, LeBron and Cari Champion who is the host of the television show “Uninterrupted” happened on February 15th of 2018. In this special edition of Uninterrupted, LeBron James and Kevin Durant spoke a good amount about today’s political issues and the problem they and many others have with the United States and President Trump. After everybody heard what the two athletes spoke about, Laura Ingraham of Fox News had something extremely controversial to say. Ingraham went on the air and responded to these athlete’s comments by telling both players to keep their political beliefs to themselves. She made remarks on LeBron James who made the leap from high school his junior year to the NBA and never attended college saying, “this is what happens when you attempt to leave high school a year early to join the NBA.” Also stating “and it's always unwise to see political advice from someone who gets paid a hundred million dollars a year to bounce a ball.”  By stating that these professional basketball players should just “shut up and dribble” Kevin Durant thought Ingraham’s comments were racist. He reported to Sam Amick of USA Today in an interview and stated “To me it was racist. What does (skin color) have to do with anything? We all have an opinion, just like she has an opinion that I disagree with. But I’m not going on TV, or tweeting, and calling her…” As both players were offended by Ingraham’s comments James responded on media day saying “we will not shut up and dribble”. Players around the league and public figures have been supporting LeBron’s comment with a trending hashtag on twitter “#WeWillNotShutUpAndDribble”.

Stakeholders
Key stakeholders on the side of the NBA include the commissioner Adam Silver, owners around the league, NBA fans and viewers, employees of the league, peer companies like the National Football League (NFL), and advertising and marketing partners. Key stakeholders of Fox News would include investors, viewers of the show, employees, executives and upper-management, and other news stations in the industry.
Individualism
An Individualist believes business actions should maximize profits for the owners of a business, but do so within the law. Individualist would find Ingraham’s comments to be ethically permissible because she is increasing viewership which is maximizing profits for the company and she is doing so within the law. An Individualist would also find the NBA’s side to be ethically permissible for the same reasons and because Adam Silver supported the comments from the players.
Utilitarianism
An Utilitarian believes business actions should aim to maximize the happiness in the long run for all conscious beings that are affected by the business action. Utilitarians would find Ingraham’s comments to be ethically impermissible due to her not aiming to maximize happiness for all conscious beings that were affected by her distasteful statements. An Utilitarian would find the NBA’s side to be ethically impermissible due to the players not focusing on maximizing happiness for all beings but only ones who support what their stance is.
Kantianism
LeBron's Instagram post following the instant
A Kant always acts in ways that respect and honor individuals and their choices. They do not believe in lying, cheating, manipulating or harming others to get their way. They use informed and rational consent from all parties. A Kant would believe Ingraham’s comments to be ethically impermissible due to the reporter not respecting the players’ political stance. A Kant would believe the players’ side to be ethically permissible because they simply stated their own opinions and respected that other people have different beliefs.
Virtue Theory
A Virtue Theorist embodies a variety of virtuous or good character traits and avoids viscious or bad character traits. They would find the reporter’s comments to be ethically impermissible due to her showing bad characteristics. They would find the players’ side to be ethically permissible because of the good virtues being shown.
